Worcester becomes the Pan-Mass starting line

The Pan-Mass Challenge moves its traditional Sturbridge start to Holy Cross this year. Opening ceremonies arrive Friday, then more than 6,800 riders and 3,500 volunteers take on the weekend in support of cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber.

Raja 50 celebrates Ilaiyaraaja’s five decades of composing with a rare live concert built around the film scores and orchestral writing that shaped Tamil cinema. Worcester is one of a select group of host cities, and the listed run time is about three and a half hours.

Red Cup Coffee is planning a coworking-friendly shop at 304 Shrewsbury St., Identity Coffee is preparing locations at The Revington and Railroad Lofts, and August Coffee is already open at 548 Main St. The city is gaining several new answers to “Where should we meet?”

The old Shacks block is getting another life

The Clark Block, remembered by generations as the home of Shacks Clothes, has been selected for a state housing incentive. The plan brings 48 apartments, including five affordable units, into a building first constructed in 1854 and expanded in 1884.

QCC raises the final beam on a major rebuild

Quinsigamond Community College has topped off the steel frame for a new QCC Center. The former athletic facility is being remade with advanced manufacturing and robotics labs, hospitality training spaces, flexible classrooms, and renovated athletic facilities.

A new Chipotle opens on the South Side

The new location opened July 22 and is expected to employ about 30 people. Whether Worcester needed another Chipotle is a debate for the comments. The more useful fact is that Stafford Street has another fast dinner option and the restaurant is still hiring.

City funding backs 74 affordable homes

$1.36 million across four Worcester projects

The latest Affordable Housing Trust Fund awards support work at Lakeside Apartments, the historic Heywood Boot & Shoe building, Colony on Grove, and a small South Worcester infill project. Together, the awards are expected to help create 74 deed-restricted affordable homes.
