| | | Straight from your neighbors' feeds | Kids need something to do this summer? | | | What's moving in Worcester County | Worcester is seeking a new operator for Union Station’s Grand Hall and restaurant space The Worcester Redevelopment Authority issued an RFP to lease and operate Union Station’s Grand Hall event space, restaurant area, and outdoor patio. The leasable footprint includes about 15,535 square feet on the ground floor, plus about 6,130 square feet of restaurant and commissary space. Minimum proposed rent starts at $11,000 per month, with proposals due June 26. Operators must commit to at least five years and host at least 75 annual events in the Grand Hall. Why it matters: This is a downtown activation story. If Worcester lands the right operator, Union Station could become more than a transit landmark. It could become a stronger events, dining, and hospitality anchor. Read More › Market on Exchange returns May 17, giving local food vendors a seasonal boost Market on Exchange kicks off its second season on Sunday, May 17, running every Sunday through October 25 on Exchange Street between Main Street and Commercial Street. The market will feature local farms, bakers, food trucks, artisan vendors, live music, craft beer, and family-friendly activities. It is also launching a SNAP Match Program that lets SNAP recipients increase weekly spending power by up to $25 above EBT benefits. Why it matters: This is a small-business foot traffic engine. It supports local vendors, gives downtown another recurring reason to gather, and helps food-based entrepreneurs test products in the wild. Read More › Worcester’s proposed FY27 budget crosses the $1 billion mark City Manager Eric Batista announced Worcester’s proposed FY27 operating budget earlier this month, calling it the city’s first $1 billion operating budget. The city says the milestone is driven by increased state aid, rising property values, and new private investment. The proposal includes new inspection positions intended to help businesses move through the permitting process more efficiently, plus a Business Development Division position to support small businesses. Why it matters: This is the machinery behind the machinery. If Worcester can speed up permitting and small-business support, that matters directly to developers, restaurants, contractors, landlords, and entrepreneurs. Read More › Zoning and development items remain active in the pipeline The Worcester Economic Development Committee’s pending-items document includes multiple zoning matters, including proposed changes from Manufacturing, General to Business, General for several Grove Street/Brookfield Street/North Street/Powers Court parcels. It also includes continued review of minimum off-street parking requirements and zoning around Charlton, Hermon, and Beacon streets. Why it matters: Zoning is where future business activity gets quietly approved, delayed, or strangled in the crib. These items suggest Worcester is still wrestling with how to convert older land-use patterns into modern commercial, residential, and mixed-use growth. Read More › Chamber calendar shows small-business networking momentum The Worcester Regional Chamber calendar lists several business-relevant events in the coming days, including Coffee and Connections on May 19, The Worcester Stronghold, a small-business initiative, also on May 19, and a Diverse Professional Round Table CEO Breakfast on May 21. Why it matters: Not glamorous, but useful. These are the kinds of rooms where referrals, vendors, partnerships, and local deal flow start moving.
